Manage product templates

Product templates act as models for the products you sell. One of the first steps when creating a product is to choose the product template as this is a pattern for the product and similar products.

info

We've renamed Product Types to Product Templates. Learn more here.

Products inherit settings from the product template, including the attribute set, default weight, and default tax code. A product can belong to only one product template. Typically, you must create the appropriate product templates before you can add a product.

Permission requirements

Managing product templates is typically reserved for marketplace operators. You must also have the Manage product templates and attributes permission assigned through your permission group.

Add a product template

  1. In the dashboard, navigate to Product -> Settings.
  2. Select Templates.
  3. Select Create template.
  4. Input the template's name.
  5. Input a default tax code for all products in this template.
  6. Input a default weight for products in this template, which can be used to calculate shipping rates.
  7. Enable the Can prices be overridden for this product template? toggle to allow price customization for products in this template when handling draft orders.
  8. Select Save.

Product template strategy

Product template strategy defines how a marketplace's product templates will manage products and their attributes. A marketplace can have one of these two strategies for its templates:

  1. Flexible: This approach allows attributes to be added to a product even if they don't exist in the product's template. Sellers can add attributes to a product without the permission of the marketplace operator.
  2. Strict: With this strategy, attributes can only be added to a product if they are already defined in the product's template. Sellers cannot add attributes to a product.

All marketplaces start with the Flexible template strategy by default. To change this strategy, you must contact your Traide representative.

Assign attributes

The attribute defines the input type and whether a value is required. When you add or remove attributes from a product template, this change applies to all products using that product template.

When you add an attribute, it appears on all existing products in that template. You can update each product individually to set this value. Conversely, removing an attribute or its value from a product template also removes it from all products that use that template.

Before you start

You must first create an attribute before you can add it to a product template.

Assign product attributes

Product attributes define characteristics that apply to the product and all variants.

Steps

  1. In the dashboard, navigate to Products -> Settings.
  2. Select Templates.
  3. Select a product template.
  4. Select Attributes.
  5. In the Product attributes section, select Assign attributes. To unassign a product attribute, select the trash can icon then select Confirm when prompted.
  6. Select one or more attributes, then confirm your selection.

Assign variant attributes

Variant attributes define the different options in which a product is available for order. Currently, variant attributes can only be created with the following input types:

  • Boolean
  • Dropdown
  • Swatch

Steps

  1. In the dashboard, navigate to Products -> Settings.
  2. Select Templates.
  3. Select a product template.
  4. Select Attributes.
  5. In the Variant attributes section, select Assign attributes. To unassign a variant attribute, select the trash can icon then select Confirm when prompted.
  6. Select one or more attributes, then confirm your selection.

Delete a product template

danger

Deleting a product template also deletes all associated products.

To protect your marketplace, you cannot delete a template if there are ongoing orders involving products or variants associated with it. This includes draft orders. Here's how you can delete a product template:

  1. In the dashboard, navigate to Products -> Settings.
  2. Select Templates.
  3. Select a product template.
  4. Select Delete.
  5. Check the confirmation box and select Delete.
